Hosta 'Brother Stefan'

Hosta never let you down... well, almost never. When hurricane Irene hit Long Island in August of 2011 much of my garden near the beach was flooded by salt water from the bay. Since the plants were still in active growth, the salt spray and hot weather desiccated the foliage on about half of my plant material. Shrubs, mature trees, perennials and even the lawn died a quick death! It was devastating to know that there was little I could do besides get fresh water on everything ASAP! The daylilies faired the best along with some tenacious invasives like houttuynia cordata. But, some of my nearly 30 year old hosta dwindled down to starter plant sizes when they came up this spring. I’ve dug the remaining crowns and potted them up to share with other gardeners when the plants grow out. To be continued...
