Fall Favorites 2021
The chill is in the air! We’ve had some blustery, cold, dreary days , but there is still beauty to be found in the garden.
The tropical leaves of Italian arum are set off nicely by two types of carex- emerald green C. muskingumensis and C. ‘Silver Sceptre’. I absolutely love the look of Italian arum, but it can become a garden thug and I’ve been trying to eradicate it from many areas where I don’t want it to colonize.
Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Diablo’ or Ninebark has coppery fall color, while the hydrangea and variegated sambucus calm down the fire.
Euphorbias have become one of my favorite plant families. Euphorbia ‘Black Bird’ is stunning IMO.
The carex in the large bronze planter is C. ‘Feather Falls’. It gets 18” tall and 36” wide. I like the way it drapes over the edge of the container. As it gets bigger it will be even more impressive. The smaller carex is C. ‘Evergold’.
Acer palmatum ‘Lion Heart’ is a shade of red in three seasons.
Gaillardias are great companion plants for the front of the border. This one doesn’t realize that it’s December.
Skimmia japonica makes a handsome evergreen shrubs. The male plant has clusters of tiny deep reddish pink buds that open to very fragrant white star-shaped flowers in the spring. The female plant bears the red berries.
A gaggle of geese are frequent visitors at this time of year and into the winter. Fortunately, they disappear as spring turns to summer.

I’m so happy that I planted this evergreen shrub! It’s called Mahonia x media ‘Marvel’ and I think that the blossoms are marvelous! To top it off, the blooms will be followed by dusky blue- purple berries in late summer/ fall! I didn’t stick my nose in the flowers, but they are said to be fragrant. This deer resistant shrub gets 6’ high by 4’ wide. Commonly called “Oregon Grape Holly", this shrub enjoys a spot on the shady garden.
Cryptomeria japonica 'Black Dragon' likes full sun, but will tolerate part shade and only grows 6' -10' high and 4' -5' wide, so it is nice for a smaller space. It has dark, almost black, evergreen foliage with layered dense branches. It prefers well drained, acidic soil which is all we have here on the beachfront! This "False Cypress" is often used as a Christmas holiday plant. If you're lucky, you can pick one up on sale after Christmas!
